Coles County Safety and Detention Center Overview

The Coles County Safety and Detention Center, also called the Coles County Jail, is operated by the Coles County Sheriff's Office. It is the confirmed detention facility in Coles County for this project. The jail receives people arrested by the sheriff's office, Charleston Police Department, Mattoon Police Department, Eastern Illinois University Police Department, Lake Land College Police Department, Oakland Police Department, and other agencies whose cases route through the county court system.

The current jail was completed in 1977. The sheriff history page lists a capacity of 165, while the Illinois Sheriffs' Association listing reports 154 jail beds. The facility is inspected under Illinois County Jail Standards, and the sheriff's 2025 annual report says the jail was declared compliant for the third consecutive year. It is not a state prison. Once someone is sentenced to state prison and transferred, IDOC becomes the correct search system.

Coles County Jail Capacity

The sheriff's 2025 annual report gives the best recent population numbers for the Coles County Safety and Detention Center. It lists a 2025 average daily population of 99, up from 75 in 2024, with a January low of 87 and a December high of 115. The jail served 101,996 inmate meals in 2025, which also reflects the higher count. The report says 1,388 people were booked in 2025 and 84 inmates were transferred to IDOC.

Public office hours for the sheriff's office are Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., but the jail operates around the clock for custody and intake.

Visit Coles County Jail Inmates

The sheriff visitation page states that each inmate is allowed one 25-minute visit each week, with the week running Sunday through Saturday. On-site visits are no charge. Each visitor may visit one inmate each week and must be on the inmate's approved visitor list. The approved visitor list is not changed until an inmate has been in custody for at least six continuous months. Visitors must show state photo ID, register before visiting, and follow staff directions to the visitation area.

Coles County Jail Booking

The Coles County Safety and Detention Center is not where state-prison sentences are served. The sheriff's 2025 annual report says Coles County transferred 84 inmates to IDOC in 2025. It also states that female inmates are transported to Logan Correctional Center and male inmates to Graham Correctional Center. Coles County Jail Updates

The 2025 annual report gives several facility-specific updates. A jail remodel approved in 2024 began in March 2025 with demolition of old visitation rooms, a storage area, and the nurse's office. Construction started on medical observation cells, but delays occurred because of cell doors and hardware. The report expected doors and locks in March 2026 and hoped for completion around mid-summer 2026. An exterior stairway was added to the secure part of the jail, and an IT room was also added.

The jail uses Guardian Command Cloud for required cell checks and Medication Manager for medication distribution and refusal records. The sheriff also reported continued recruitment challenges for corrections officers and telecommunicators.
